CLIMATE CHANGE IS SEXIST

The Campaign

In the context of COP30, the advocacy campaign "Climate Change is Sexist" raises awareness about the gendered impact of climate change. Despite being significantly affected by its consequences, women are underrepresented in climate discussions and negotiations. This campaign seeks to amplify their voices and highlight the intersection of gender inequality and climate change.

CARE Belgium is adapting this campaign to focus on raising awareness about these critical gender issues among Belgian stakeholders (civil society organizations, policy makers, international organizations and climate conscious friends). By doing so, we create a space to discuss the urgent need for gender-sensitive responses to the climate crisis.

The Issue: Climate Change is Sexist

Climate change has a disproportionately negative impact on women, exacerbating existing gender inequalities. Women, especially in developing countries, are often the primary caregivers, responsible for sourcing food, water, and fuel, making them particularly vulnerable to the changing climate. CARE seeks to shed light on how women are impacted daily by climate change, from extreme weather events to the loss of livelihoods, and how these challenges are often compounded by social, economic, and cultural factors.

The Response and CARE’s Actions: Climate Heroines

While climate change poses significant challenges, women also play an indispensable role in the fight against it. Women are at the forefront of adaptation efforts, leading initiatives to mitigate climate impacts in their communities.

CARE’s Climate Heroines program highlights these women who, despite facing adversity, are contributing to innovative solutions for climate adaptation and resilience. With the support of CARE, these women are empowering their communities and showing that the fight against climate change is not only necessary but can also be led by those who are most affected.

The advocacy event will conclude with a networking event followed at 8:00 p.m. by the play “Regards - Climate Change is Sexist” by La Compagnie qui Pétille (reservations required: tickets €10 here).
